Which Tank Is Right For Me?
When it comes to choosing a tank to suit your needs and your mod, the choices can seem overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be! Knowing which tank is best for you can make your vaping experience easier and more enjoyable.
Your tank is one of the most important parts of your vape, but with so many on the market how do you know which tank is the right tank for you? To know which tank is best for you, it is good to know the key differences between each type of tank and to know what you personally are looking for out of your tank such as flavour, cloud, mouth to lung, direct lung etc.
Knowing which mod you will be putting your tank on and what sort of wattage you want to run at will also make choosing your tank easier and ensure a better fit for you.
Here’s a rundown of the different types of tanks that you will find on the market and what to look for in a tank.
MTL Standard Tanks
Your standard mouth to lung (MTL) tanks feature a glass bulb for your e-juice, they screw onto your mod using a 510 thread, making most tanks and mods interchangeable. They often have higher resistance coils – perfect for those who want to vape at a lower wattage. They are most likely to be a mouth to lung vaping experience with smaller clouds.
Examples Include:
Low wattage requirements.
Tight airflow characteristics like a cigarette, provides strong throat hit and refined flavour.
Aspire Nautilus 3
Narrow mouth piece.
Less vapour production than DL tanks.
Coil resistance above 1 ohm.
Sub-Ohm Tanks
Sub-Ohm tanks are essentially the same as a standard tank, except they support coils with resistances under 1 ohm – making these tanks able to run at higher wattages. Sub-Ohm tanks are better for direct to lung vaping (DL). These tanks provide an enhanced flavour and larger clouds. A sub-ohm tank is recommended for those chasing a high wattage vaping experience, with larger clouds. Sub-ohm tanks usually require a larger mod or box mod and are not always compatible with a pen style vape.
Examples Include:
Can output a higher wattage due to lower resistance coils.
Larger in size typically.
Best suited to 70/30 e-liquids.
Designed to mimic the cloud and flavour experience of dripping with the convenience of a tank.
Rebuildable Atomizers
Rebuildable tank atomizers (RTAs) are similar to Sub-Ohm tanks, except instead of using pre-made coils, you build your own. RTAs are in line with Sub-Ohm tanks, but much more hands on – not suitable for beginners due to the challenging set up. However, they are cheaper to use in the long run as wire and cotton are cheaper. If you have the time and patience to understand and safely build your own coils, rebuilding can be a fun hobby.
Rebuildable dripping atomizers (RDAs) are similar to RTAs but instead of a glass tank to hold the juice, you drip e-juice directly onto the deck. This makes them a bit less convenient than RTAs, but the flavour and clouds are a good selling point. RDAs are also not recommended for beginners.
Examples Include:
Kanthal wire and cotton are the two primary supplies.
Once the wire and cotton is installed into the posts, you can fill up the tank.
Usually has 2, 3 or 4 posts to hold wire and cotton
Doesn’t have a tank to hold e-liquid, the juice is dripped onto the cotton and coil.
In Conclusion
There are hundreds of different mod and tank combinations available out there, finding one that works for you will enhance your vaping experience.
There is also the option of a pod style vaping device, which uses a plastic pod in place of a glass tank. A pod system is usually a smaller, lower wattage device good for on the go or stealth vaping. The commonly plastic pod is good for those prone to smashing their glass tank, or those beginning their vaping journey. Most pod vapes have only one style of pod that can fit on the mod.
It’s worth considering what type of mod you have and where you are in your vaping journey. For smokers just switching to vaping, a mouth to lung tank is preferred by many as it emulates a cigarette draw style. For many other vapers, a Sub Ohm tank provides a good balance between convenience and performance.
Taking the time to figure out the ideal tank for you will give you the best chance of enjoying your vaping experience.
