Throwback Thursday: Charging Your Device – The Do’s & Don’ts

Batteries used for vape devices come in different shapes, sizes and power outputs. However, the one thing they all have in common is they are made with lithium ion. Batteries with this amount of power are also found in many other electrical devices such as laptops and tablets. Having high amounts of power output, they must be handled and charged correctly to avoid potential harm to yourself and the device.

When it comes to charging your vape device, there are some do’s and don’ts.

Internal Battery Devices

These simple devices are designed to be charged via a USB that is included at time of purchase. It’s also best to use that USB rather than your phone USB to charge your device. Battery life for this type of devices is around 300 charging cycles. When you notice the battery life of your device has significantly decreased, it’s time for a new device as the battery is no longer functioning properly.

Dual External Battery Charging

When it comes to external battery devices, most Kits and when purchasing Mods on their own come with a USB for updating internal software. Using the USB method to charge these types of devices is not recommended. The best and safest way to charge any external batteries is with an external battery charger!

The reason it’s not recommended to charge this type of device via USB is because the batteries aren’t charged at the same time. This can cause issues when dual batteries used for the same device are different to each other. When multiple batteries are used for the same device, the batteries are pretty much “married” to each other.

This strange term is used not just for vape devices, but anything that uses multiple batteries. It’s the short way of saying that batteries that are used together must stay together “until death do part”. For example, you have been using a pair of batteries in a device and one gets damaged. The undamaged battery cannot be used with another battery so either responsibly dispose it or if it is fairly new it can be used for something that requires a single battery.

Charging, The Do’s & Don’ts

No matter if you use a internal or external battery device, these safety requirements should be followed:

The Do’s

  • Check your device and/or battery(s) for signs of damage
  • Charge your external batteries with an external battery charger such as Nitecore
  • For internal battery devices, be sure to use the correct charging cable

The Don’ts

  • Never charge damaged batteries or devices
  • Do not leave batteries on charge for extended periods of time
  • Do not charge batteries unattended
  • Never overcharge your battery

Battery Lifespan

External batteries generally have a lifespan of up to 12 months or between 300 – 500 charge cycles. Once a performance drop is noticed, it’s time to replace them. Alternatively, replacing them once a year is a safe bet.

Internal batteries are similar, when a performance drop is noticed, it’s time for a new device.

There are two things that are the worst to run out of, e-juice and battery power. Carrying an extra set or two ensures you’re set for the day/night. Though if they aren’t stored safely, they are highly likely to get damaged and become dangerous. If they are loose in a bag or pocket, they risk coming into contact with metal objects and/or the integrity of the wrapping can become compromised. Silicone Cases are a great way to keep your batteries safe either on the go or at home/work. These cases come in a range of sizes ensuring a snug fit. They also come in a range of colours and sizes for singledual or quad.
